May's Birthstone - Emerald

May babies are extremely lucky. The emerald gemstone is the birthstone of May and is considered the gemstone of spring for evoking lush green gardens and a sense of renewal.

The emerald birthstone is prized for its rich green colour and rarity. Emeralds are renowned for their beauty and elegance, making them a popular choice. The captivating hue adds a touch of luxury and sophistication to any design, making them a beloved choice. Emerald is often used synonymously with the colour green and is even regarded as the very definition of the colour. The most desirable emerald birthstone colours are bluish green to pure green, with vivid colour saturation.

In past centuries the birthstone symbolised fertility and good fortune and was even thought to cure diseases and restore exhausted travellers. Spiritual traditions and legends held the gems to high regard as they thought the gemstone had powers of making the wearer more intelligent and quick-witted. Emerald lore also claimed that by placing an emerald under the tongue, you could see into the future.

Royalty as far back as Cleopatra adorned their jewellery and crowns with emerald. Roman tradition claimed the gemstone had therapeutic properties for the eyes by relieving eye strain.

As well as symbolising spring, the birthstone also symbolises truth, wisdom, intuition, foresight, abundance, and loyalty. Throughout history the birthstone has had cultural significance – for example, in the ancient cultures of Rome and Greece, emerald birthstones were often linked to the goddess Venus, who symbolised love and hope.

Colombia has been the source of the finest emeralds for more than 500 years, and Colombian emeralds are the standard by which all others are measured. Three mining sites in Colombia are particularly noteworthy, Muzo, Chivor and Coscuez. Each locality produces a range of colours: darker tones of pure green come from Muzo, Emeralds that are lighter in tone and slightly bluish, are found in Chivor, and slightly yellowish green are unearthed in Coscuez.

Whether worn as a statement piece or a subtle accent, the emerald birthstone is cherished for its timeless appeal and colourful enticement. Take a look at our Emerald and Green Garnet jewellery for the perfect gift or treat yourself!
