About Topaz - November's Birthstone
It is November, which means we say hello to a new birthstone!
Those with November birthdays have a beautiful birthstone: Topaz. The topaz birthstone symbolises love and affection and it is said to bestow strength and intelligence on the person who wears it. Some believe the word “Topaz” comes from the Sanskrit word “tapas”, which means “fire”, as topaz is sometimes found in a deep golden colour.
The November birthstone was long thought to have benefits. For example, Topaz has long been associated with beauty, intelligence, and long life - mainly if worn over the heart in India. Also, Egyptians believed that topaz protected their owners from harm and make the wearer invisible in times of emergency – how crazy is that!
Minas Gerais, a state in Brazil, is one of the most important sources for high quality topaz, which has been mined there for more than two centuries. Colours such as yellow to orange, red, pink, violet, and purple are unearthed here. North-western Pakistan is known for producing pink topaz. Today topaz deposits are found in the US, Madagascar, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, and Namibia.
Most people are familiar with topaz in its blue hues, once the rarest colour of topaz is now the most common due to an enhancement process that turns colourless topaz to blue. Other naturally occurring hues will be dependent upon how well saturated the colour is in the gemstone, with browns being common also.
Topaz measures an 8 (out of 10) on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, so it is great for everyday wear. These factors, along with the variety of colours available, combine to make topaz a must-own gemstone.
